Heyokay — The anti-loneliness café

News at the speed of Tik Tok. Self esteem eroded by Insta. We need less meta, more real. Heyokay is here to welcome you. Have a drink and a chat, join a board game. There’s plenty of time to hang.

The project

Heyokay is a café franchise launched with ‘A Place To’, an affordable co-living concept by Bjarke Ingels among others.

You’re welcome
Heyokay is for everyone, especially students or people in their first job. Think affordable dish-of-the-day. Shared tables for hanging out, eating or working. 2nd hand sales, games nights and live concerts.

Great is better than perfect
Heyokay is designed as an antidote to the pressure of perfection. A place to feel welcome, even if you turn up on your own. It really wants to know who you are. And it doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Award winning
Marie Rønnebæk-Rørth, CEO of Heyokay, was awarded ‘Firebrand of the Year 2021’ by newspaper Jydske Vestkysten for her tireless work to launch Heyokay. Today, Heyokay is an integrated part of A Place To.

Affordable doesn’t have to feel cheap. Simple doesn’t have to be boring. Young is not dumb.

Hello, how are you?

Everything Heyokay, including the name, comes from the brand idea of ‘Be Seen. Leave Happy.’

Be Seen
Think ‘Be Seen’ as ‘we see you’. We literally see every student, barista, cleaner and supplier - every human being. Everyone’s acknowledged. We like quirks and individuality. And we like you, when you’re you.

Leave Happy
Everything we do, make, invent and say should leave you happier than you were. And leave us happier than we were. Everything Heyokay from the coffee, merch, cozy sofa to the Monday night concerts and even the toilet lighting will leave you smiling.

360˚

From startup vision to brand strategy to name. From design concept to fine-tuning to pixel perfection. Visuals, writing, ideas. 3+ years of collaboration.

Start and start again
Working with startups means staying agile. During the first two months, we changed the business strategy from a European 7-Eleven competitor to a youthful, affordable and empathic chain of cafés.

We’ll call it what?
With the new strategy, we scrapped the original name Shortcut™ which, to be honest, we never truly loved. We eventually arrived at Heyokay. Sure, it took a little getting used to. Today we love it.

1+1 really is 3
The best clients are collaborators — sharing frustrations and high fives. We worked on names, graphics, vending machines, app reward schemes, dish names, ads, signs, hoodies and everything in between.

Guidelines you’ll actually read

We see brand guidelines as world building: simple rules for endless, fertile, flexible creation.
